Whyalla Secondary College delivers a new generation of innovative learning environments tuned to the needs of this economically significant regional centre in South Australia. Providing 15,700sqm of learning facilities over multiple floor levels, this benchmark regional school will accommodate 1,500 students from Years 7-12 across a series of compact, extensively connected spaces. Located within the heart of Whyalla, the new school is uniquely positioned between the existing UniSA and TAFE campuses, offering outstanding opportunities for inter-disciplinary learning. Developed through an extensive series of stakeholder engagement sessions, the new school’s design concept was generated through a holistic consideration of both internal and external learning environments. A key focus of our design work referenced a specific agenda of developing a new benchmark on how these spaces are linked both vertically and horizontally. Eight key design principles were established and applied across new multi-level Learning Precincts, Exhibition Gallery, Entrepreneurial Hub, Performing Arts theatre, twin court Gymnasium, Inclusive Learning and a central common courtyard. Extensive sports facilities include an AFL oval, soccer/hockey pitches and tennis/netball courts. This project was designed and delivered in collaboration with Cox Architecture.
